West Stanly Wins Top Gun Award

Recently, Stanly Community College (SCC) and Stanly County Schools (SCS) hosted the 18th Annual Electronics Blast Competition for students from North, South and West Stanly High Schools. West Stanly won the day-long competition and was awarded the Top Gun Championship trophy.

This local competition involves a 100-question written exam and a hands-on practical where the students build a soldering project and perform circuit measurements using oscilloscopes and digital multimeters. Students were tested against other students in the same level in three different skill levels, which were graded by instructors from the College.

During the awards ceremony, Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Heather Hill welcomed those present and gave opening remarks. She offered a "top ten" list for a successful career in Engineering and encouraged the students to maintain good grades throughout their high school journey. Career and College Promise Advisor Steve Cumming spoke about tuition-free pathways offered for high school students.

Jeff Swaringen, SCC Instructor of Electronics Engineering/CAD, was the master of ceremony and stressed the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) training in high school. Associate Vice President of Advanced Manufacturing & Industrial Technology Jeff Parsons and Stanly County Schools Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction Danny Poplin presented medals to the winners in each skill level.

"Stanly Community College is pleased to collaborate with Stanly County Schools in sponsoring this electronics blast each year. It is designed to prepare high school technical students for state competition in SkillsUSA, a national and worldwide competition that showcases the best career and technical education students in the nation," commented Dr. Hill.

During the awards ceremony, Mr. Swaringen gave special thanks to several groups: Kathy Johnson (North Stanly), Bill Sorenson (South Stanly), and Adam Storms (West Stanly). Also thanks to the SCC and SCS team: Gary Hatley, Dan Parmer, Jeff Swaringen, Steven Eury, Brian Crump, Ken Rummage, Tabitha Ritchie, Tammi McIlwaine, Donna Jones, Amanda Melton, Georgia Harvey and Jeff Parsons. SCC students that assisted were Curt Love, Michael Brien, and David Cummens.
