Graduation is a Special Time at Stanly Community College

Dr. John Enamait May is a special month at Stanly Community College; it is the month where our faculty and staff have the honor of celebrating our students’ accomplishment of graduation. This year we will have over 400 students who will receive either associate degrees, diplomas or certificates. Graduation is scheduled for Thursday, May 11, with commencement ceremonies at 12, 3 and 6 pm at the Agri-Civic Center.

This year we have exciting new changes. First, we are holding a special student Honors Ceremony on Wednesday, May 10, at 6 pm at the Agri-Civic Center. This ceremony will showcase our students who will receive the following recognition:

  • Student Leadership Awards – Club Awards
  • Student Government Recognition – SGA Awards
  • NCCC System Awards – Academic Excellence, Dallas Herring, and the Gov. Robert W. Scott Leadership Award
  • SCC Foundation Awards – Outstanding Alumni, Dr. George E. Eddins Jr Award, Annie Ruth Kelley Award, Diane H. Burton Service Award, Edward J Snyder Exceptional Scholars Award, Shirley Dennis Outstanding Adult High School/High School Equivalency Award
  • Honor Cords – Student Government Association, Veterans, Global Distinction, and Honors (GPA greater than 3.5)

During the Honors Ceremony, award winners will receive a framed certificate, and then at commencement, they will receive the actual plaque. Additionally, this will give students another opportunity to celebrate with their family, just in case family members cannot attend the full commencement ceremony the following day.

We realize that not all family and friends can attend commencement ceremonies on Thursday, May 11th. For those unable to attend, we will be live streaming all three commencement day ceremonies. The day of commencement, a link to the live stream can be found by visiting Additionally, a copy of the commencement ceremony in either a DVD or Flash Drive format can be purchased so you can share with friends and relatives who were not able to see the live stream. Information about the DVD or Flash Drive will be available at our Bookstore table in the Agri-Civic lobby.

Another change this year is the availability of professional photos. SCC has partnered with a local photographer, Chris Lentz, to take photos during the commencement ceremonies that will be available for purchase. Details will be available at commencement. You are certainly free to take your own photos, and we will be offering free photos at our photo booth in the Agri-Civic lobby.

Finally, on a personal note, I want to express my pride and happiness for all our graduating students. I am a proud product of the North Carolina Community College System and know what an impact it made in my life. I fervently hope and believe that graduating from SCC is a new start for each student, and I am excited to be part of it!
