Visual Storytelling & Portfolio Design

Course Description: The class will cover how to document stories through images. Students will complete a 5-10 image photo story that focuses on a theme, event, person, or social trend through a photojournalism style. We will also cover how to feature the students’ best work in a genre-specific print portfolio.

Prerequisites: This is the last class in the certificate program and all but one of the previous 5 class must be completed with a "S" Satisfactory grade.

Requirements: Digital SLR camera

Class Meetings: There will be 10 class meetings and the classes meet 2 hours per session for a total of 20 hours. Students should prepare for several hours of course assignments outside of the classroom.

Course Objectives: By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Research & develop photo story ideas
  • Understand how to document photo essays
  • Learn how to edit and tone your best work
  • Produce a professional printed portfolio
  • Apply your photography knowledge working with potential clients

Course Text: No textbook required

Grading: Students will receive a “S” Satisfactory if they attend 80% of the total course hours and meet course requirements as established by instructor or a “U” Unsatisfactory if are absent in excess of 20% of total course hours or fail to meet course requirements as established by instructor.
