The SCC chapter of Future Business Leaders of America Collegiate is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2023-2024 – and celebrating big with the election of Toby Neal, an SCC student, as the first national FBLA-C president to come from North Carolina!

“FBLA Collegiate” was formerly known by the Greek letters “Phi Beta Lambda.”

Stanly Community College's FBLA-C chapter has been named a national “Gold Seal Chapter” for 20 consecutive years, and SCC students have received state and national awards in competitive events.

At the recent National Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Gage Barrier and Liz Lassing won Second Place in the Hospitality Management event, Madison Thomas was Fourth Place in Sports Marketing, Chloe Thomas was Seventh Place in Management Decision Making, and Toby was Fifth Place in Impromptu Speaking and Third Place in the Future Business Executive event.

At the 2022 National Leadership Conference and Competitive Events in Chicago, both Chloee Thomas and Nicole Story won First Place in their events. Toby Neal won Third Place in the Job Interview competition and was also elected as national parliamentarian for the year, becoming the third SCC student to serve as a NATIONAL officer!

The events include students from universities and community colleges. The 2024 state events will be in Charlotte in April, and the 2024 National Leadership Conference will be in Orlando, Florida.

All students interested in developing additional leadership, career planning/preparation, and business skills are invited to participate in FBLA-C.

FBLA-C is for all students, particularly those in the Business Administration, Accounting, and computer-related curriculums and students who plan to work in the business area of whatever their profession is. Seated and online, day and evening, and full- and part-time students may join.

The SCC Chapter does local chapter meetings and conducts local leadership and service projects. The Chapter also participates in state activities and is the home of numerous state officers, including seven state presidents and the 2013-2024 Executive Vice President.

Among the many PBL members who have gone on to successful careers and community service leadership roles are Kathy Almond, former CEO of the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce; Martha Sue Hall and Dexter Townsend, members of the Albemarle City Council; Marty Ingram, vice principal at Albemarle Middle School; and Lee Pickler, owner of ScanOnline in Locust. Mr. Pickler was named the SCC PBL Business Person of the Year for 2020 and went on to receive the state and national level award.

At the first state conference SCC PBL'ers attended in 1975, two students won jars of pickles brought by the University of Mount Olive chapter for door prizes. Fifty years from that "humble" beginning, Stanly Community College is one of the country's most recognized chapters!
