In the world of auctioneering, quick thinking and a sharp voice are essential—but at Stanly Community College’s Carolina Auction Academy (CAA), students are also taught the power of purpose. Since its founding in 2005, the program hasn’t only prepared future auctioneers for the fast-paced world of bid calling but also provided them with valuable skills and knowledge. Still, it has also instilled a spirit of service through hands-on experiences that benefit the broader community.
One standout example is the academy’s longstanding support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Throughout its 20-year history, CAA students have raised over $60,000 for the organization through live fundraising auctions, showcasing not only their growing skills but also their compassion and commitment to making a difference. As part of their final project, students host a live auction where they each donate three items and take turns calling bids in front of a live audience. Over the past few years, these student-led auctions have raised over $4,500 for St. Jude, offering students a unique opportunity to apply their skills while contributing to a meaningful cause.
The next chance to see CAA alumni in action comes on August 9, when the Auctioneer Association of North Carolina hosts its Summer Summit in Albemarle. Former CAA graduates will help lead the event, which includes continuing education sessions and a Bid Calling Contest with a $1,000 cash prize on the line, along with bragging rights.
Looking ahead, the next Carolina Auction Academy course begins September 8. The 96-hour program will be offered in a blended format, with most sessions held in person and more than one-third of the program completed online. Students will learn everything from bid calling and auction law to business planning and ethics.
