Twelve students at Stanly Community College (SCC) recently completed their 12-week training program for the Electrical Lineworker certificate. The Electrical Lineworker program instructs students on the basic elements of electricity, overhead pole and electrical line construction, safety codes and applications, electric power systems, as well as transformer and meter installations. Upon successful completion of the program, students possess the necessary skills for employment in various electrical utility industries.

Although it was the College’s 12th graduating class, it was also the first class to complete their training through the College’s partnership with the City of Albemarle. The collaborative effort to instruct students in this field went into effect earlier this year.

Eight students received $500 scholarships from the State Employees Credit Union Bridge to Career Program including Nicholas Barringer, Dallas Boles, Justin Collins, Israel Diaz, Eric Dudney, Gavin Drye, Jesus Espinoza-Millan and Greyson Love. Blake Helms was the recipient of the Will Hughes Scholarship, with an award of $250. In total, $4,250 was awarded in scholarship funding.

Jay Voyles, Director of Public Utilities for the City of Albemarle was the ceremony’s guest speaker.

Graduates included Nicolas Barringer (Norwood), Dallas Boles (Troy), Justin Collins (Indian Trail), Alexander Cruz (Asheboro), Israel Diaz (Asheboro), Gavin Drye (Salisbury), Eric Dudney (Albemarle), Jesus Espinoza-Millan (Asheboro), Blake Helms (Locust), Greyson Love (Albemarle), Grayson Pope (Oakboro) and Hayden Stiller (Rockwell).

This marked the College’s 12th class of electrical lineworkers, resulting in a total of 119 graduates from the program.

According to ESMI Data (www.economicmodeling.com), the medium yearly income in this region for Electrical Power Line Installers and Repairers is $73,340, and future job growth is expected to reach 760 jobs by 2026.
