Albemarle, NC - Stanly Community College’s (SCC) Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) completed two service projects during the fall semester geared to help others in the community. As a participant in the PTK Carolinas Plastic Pollution Initiative, officers and members of the Alpha Psi Upsilon chapter distributed 300 reusable drinking bottles on campus. Each recipient pledged to use the reusable bottle at least five times, which would result in 1,500 less water bottles being used and discarded.

“We are hopeful this encourages our campus community to be more mindful about the positive impact of recycling by reducing plastic waste,” said Tanya Nicks, SCC Psychology instructor and PTK chapter advisor.

Handwritten notesIn addition, members provided the opportunity for students, faculty and staff to write letters of encouragement and hope to homeless children in the area. As part of the Honors in Action Project, these letters were then distributed to youth by a partnering Stanly County agency.

The chapter met in person and virtually throughout the semester with 21 new members joining the international honor society which celebrates high-achieving students.
