The idea of a scholarship program for young people was born in Harlem, New York by philanthropist Eugene Lang. SCC’s 21st Century Scholars program is modeled after Lang’s initiative. The program offers students’ scholarships to Stanly Community College upon successful completion of the program and high school graduation. The scholarships are for two years to SCC and are not transferable to any other institution. The chosen students agree to remain in high school, meet attendance and grade requirements, stay off drugs and alcohol, and graduate from high school.

The Stanly County School system agrees to provide support and assist with skills development through instruction and an advisory system. Stanly Community College agrees to assist students in completing financial aid forms and maintaining close contact with the student through a series of activities that might include campus visits, summer programs and career counseling.

To be selected, a student must be enrolled in a Stanly County Middle school. They must demonstrate academic scholarship or potential for achievement, possess leadership qualities, and participate in community activities. Nominations are made by school personnel.

Donor Highlights

Smith Donors

Roger Smith, Sr., and Wade M. Smith established this scholarship in memory of their parents. Both Roger and Wade practice law at Tharrington Smith, LLP, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Their legal expertise has been included in such publications as Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite, Best Lawyers® in America, and Super Lawyers.

Ford Donors

This scholarship was established in memory of David by the David F. Ford Family – Mrs. Pamela Furr Ford, his wife; Roger David Ford, his son and Dale, wife; and Weston and Connor Ford, his grandsons.

Will Hughes

The memory and aspirations of the late Will Hughes will live on in the outreach of a Heritage Endowed Scholarship at Stanly Community College (SCC). The $15,000 gift will provide scholarship assistance to Stanly Community College students with financial needs in the program areas of Advanced Manufacturing and Industrial Technology.

Cos Center Opening

Stanly Community College (SCC) Board of Trustees, SCC Foundation Board, faculty and staff, Stanly County Officials, City of Albemarle Officials, as well as community members, gathered to celebrate the dedication and open house for the Morton-Moffitt Cosmetology Center on Monday, October 17, 2016.

Nearly two-hundred people gathered outside the Center for the dedication and ceremony. The ribbon was cut by members of the Morton-Moffitt family. A reception and tours of the new facility concluded the ceremony. The naming of the new Center is in memory of Claude and Bethie Morton and Jerrie Sue Moffitt-Morton, parents and late wife of Mr. Jack Morton.

Jackie Beeker

Mrs. Jackie Furr Beeker served as a trustee on the SCC Board of Trustees from 1997-2007. She also served many years on the SCC Foundation Board and was an emeritus member of the Foundation Board after her tenure. Mrs. Beeker was a donor for the 21st Century Scholars program, a program that supports nominated students throughout high school and upon their graduation gives full two-year scholarships at SCC. Indeed, Mrs. Beeker has always been very supportive of the College and active in our community.

Dr Taylor

The Stanly Community College (SCC) Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Dr. and Mrs. Michael R. Taylor Scholarship Endowment. Dr. Taylor and his wife, Alice, have pledged $20,000 to the Foundation. In addition to pledging the $20,000, they will also be donating $1,000 annually in scholarship support, which will be earmarked for the principal to grow on the $20,000 endowment.

Julian Lee

Mrs. Joyce Lee (Julian’s widow), and daughters Daphne Sprayberry, Cindy Bingham, and Sharon Huggins established Mr. Lee’s endowed scholarship in 2019 in his memory. Mr. Lee graduated from Burnsville High School in Anson County and served in the United States Army from 1956-1958. Mr. Lee worked as a farmer for 64 years in Stanly and Anson Counties. He raised beef cattle, and farmed corn, wheat and soybeans. The scholarship is a testament to his hard work and love for what he did. By establishing the scholarship the family wishes to make it possible for others to reach their goals. The $1000 Julian W. Lee Memorial Scholarship will be awarded each year to a Stanly County resident that meets the following criteria: student must be a current senior or recent graduate of South Stanly High School, and must complete the FAFSA application and be non-eligible for Pell grant funds.

Nancy Joines

Nancy spent several years teaching math as an adjunct at the college before being hired as a full-time instructor. Later she took the position as head of Developmental and Enrichment Studies. She retired in 2010. During those years she saw firsthand the financial burdens that some students faced. Today, she serves on both the SCC Board of Trustees and as a Trustee liaison to the SCC Foundation Board of Directors.

Jackie Jernigan

Uwharrie Bank created this $30,000 endowed scholarship to honor Jernigan’s 38-year career with the organization and to assist future students in realizing their dreams and reaching their fullest potential. One of the longest-serving associates of the bank, she recently retired in December 2021. During her time with the bank, she participated in two de nova bank start-ups, multiple branch openings and acquisitions. Advancements in banking technology also allowed her the opportunity to help lead the organization in the implementation of new products and services throughout her career.

Gene Eudy

The Stanly Community College (SCC) Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Gene Eudy Endowed Scholarship by Friendship United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Eudy was a retired truck driver for C&A in Albemarle and enjoyed gardening and fishing along the coast. He was a very active member of the church and had a passion for both feeding the hungry and encouraging the opportunities for continued education before passing away in 2015.
