Stanly Community College actively promotes the good health, safety and well-being of students and employees to such extent or degree as possible while prohibiting discrimination against persons afflicted with communicable diseases.

SCC considers a communicable disease to be any condition that is reportable in North Carolina as a communicable disease or communicable condition which represents a significant threat to the public health. Communicable diseases reportable in North Carolina include, but are not limited to: influenza; tuberculosis; HIV/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS); hepatitis A, B, and C; meningitis; community-associated methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA); and sexually transmitted diseases.

1. Persons who know or who have reason to believe they are infected with a communicable disease have an obligation to conduct themselves in accordance with such knowledge in order to protect themselves and others. 

2. The College shall comply with any instructions provided by the Stanly County Health Director.

3. Students and employees who are diagnosed with communicable diseases, whether symptomatic or not, shall be allowed regular classroom and work attendance in a non-restrictive manner as long as they are able to attend classes and/or work and do not pose a medically proven threat for transmission of the disease or condition.  Students and employees who are diagnosed with a communicable disease that poses a medically proven threat shall provide a doctor’s written recommendation for any restrictions and for minimizing risk of transmission. The requirement for a doctor’s written recommendation will be waived during states of emergency, such as during pandemics, in which access to health care facilities may be restricted for public health and safety.

4. When there is no medical justification for restricting the access of students and employees who have communicable diseases, they shall be allowed access to all college facilities and services.

5. All medical information related to the communicable diseases of students and employees shall be kept confidential, and no person, group, agency, insurer, employer, or institution shall be provided any medical information without the prior, specific written consent of a student or employee unless providing such information is required by state and/or federal law.

6. The College will establish and implement a program to inform members of the college community about current information regarding communicable diseases.
